Providing world-class expertise within the related disciplines of Archaeology, History and Anthropology, the School has its roots in one of the oldest universities in Britain.
We offer a range of innovative undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Resources available to students include palaeoenvironmental, soils and dendrochronology laboratories; a Geographical Information Systems lab; high-speed wifi and computing facitlites, field survey prospection and excavation equipment and the Roderic Bowen library with its World-Class manuscript collection.
The School is amongst the largest in the University and is host to the University of Wales Archaeological Service (UWLAS), and the Sophia Centre for the Study of Cosmology in Culture. The School provides an ideal setting for a unique and interdisciplinary approach to study. Anthropology provides us with the theoretical apparatus to understand and unlock the present and Archaeology and History take those same theoretical tools to help unlock, explore and explain the past.
Staff research expertise feeds into teaching at both UG and PG level. We offer a range of UG programmes, from broad-based studies in Archaeology, History and Anthropology to more specialist ones in Modern Historical Studies, Ancient Civilisations, Medieval Studies, Ancient History and Archaeology, Ancient and Medieval History and Archaeology Professional Practice.
At PG level we offer both distance and/or residential Masters in Social Anthropology, Anthrozoology, Cultural Astronomy and Astrology, Local History, Historical Studies (Medieval), Historical Studies (Modern) and Landscape Management and Environmental Archaeology. Building on the expertise within the school and our partnerships with industry we are developing a Masters in Heritage studies.
Our staff are involved in teaching and research projects in the UK and overseas and students have opportunities to get involved as part of their degree programme. Lab, workshop and field classes run alongside traditional lecture and seminar-based teaching and we pride ourselves on the amount of one-to-one contact with our students.Whatever your programme we offer a friendly and supportive learning environment, that is small in scale and student centred, and operates upon a close and harmonious relationship between tutor and student.
The School also involves itself in a range of local community based projects. The development of the Medieval site of Strata Florida as a broader community education facility, the Monastic Wales project compiling and categorising Monastic sites across the principality, and our professional consultancy service (UWLAS) which amongst its various enterprises has played a major role in the development of the Newport ship project.
