Creative thinking; hands-on learning

About the Faculty
The Faculty of Arts and Social Studies is comprised of four Schools, each with a unique identity but with a common commitment to developing creative, skilled and employable graduates able to take their place as global citizens in a constantly changing world.
The School of Business is based on the Carmarthen campus with postgraduate activity in Lampeter and London. The suite of programmes offered at undergraduate level integrates Business Management, Information Technology, Computing and Tourism with a balance of traditional graduate skills of complex analysis and problem solving alongside the development of key practical skills and industry engagement. The School also places an emphasis on the local, national and global context of business activity and the ethical issues surrounding all aspects of entrepreneurship.
The School of Creative Arts offers programmes in Art, Film and Media with much of its academic provision delivered through the unique dual-sector partnership with the prestigious Art provision at Coleg Sir Gâr. As you would expect, the work is hands-on, creative learning underpinned by academic research and exploration. Whether students are making jewellery, sculpture, fine art, fashion or films the emphasis is “learning through doing”. In all areas of study, future employability and an understanding of the marketplace in which graduates will be generating their work is paramount in our thinking.
The School of Performing Arts offers programmes in both English and Welsh incorporating the study of Acting, Design, Production, Music and Media. The collaborative and practice-based nature of the work results in an entirely production-based final year where students are constantly involved in making theatre, films and musical performances. The School sits at the cultural heart of the University with a wide range of industry professionals contributing to the programmes as tutors, directors, designers and musical directors.
The School of Sport, Health and Outdoor Education is perfectly situated in rural West Wales with fantastic beaches and a countryside ideal for health and exercise. As its name suggests the School offers programmes focussing on physical activity whether in health, nutrition, sport or outdoor education. Students explore the psychology behind well-being and the unique relationship that exists between the individual, the group and the environment whether at home or abroad.
In all areas of the Faculty’s work, great attention is given to each student’s personal and educational journey; providing opportunities for international travel, work-placements with industry and experiential learning with others.
The integration of theory and practice, finding creative solutions to complex problems and being able to understand personal strengths and areas for development provides each graduate with a skills passport for future employability.
Keeping one’s feet on the ground whilst reaching for the sky is a maxim for all of us.
