Concert is a sell-out success
01.07.2009
The Trinity Arts Festival ended this year with a sell-out concert to celebrate the University’s new status. Internationally renowned composer Karl Jenkins conducted his own work, O Beata Trinitas, which was commissioned by the University for the occasion. The work, written by Graham Davies in three languages, was performed by a mass choir featuring the voices of 120 members of Côr y Drindod, Côr Aelwyd CF1 and Côr Godre’r Garth as well as the Chamber Orchestra of Wales.
The concert also included solo performances by Carmarthen soprano Fflur Wyn, tenor Alun Rhys Jenkins and bass Owen Webb as well as a performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana conducted by Andrew Greenwood
Also, on the programme was the performance of Eric Jones’s popular choral work Y Tangnefeddwyr (The Peace Makers) with full orchestral accompaniment arranged by Artistic Director, Eilir Owen Griffiths for the occasion.
Eilir said “The Trinity Festival this year was the best yet in terms of audience attendance as well as the fact that we were celebrating university college status.
“There were many highlights”, he continued. “The students’ performance of the show Clymau was an excellent opening event and the evening held to celebrate the university through the arts involved some of Wales’ most celebrated luminaries including Menna Elfyn, Iwan Bala, Mererid Hopwood, Nigel Jenkins, Mary Lloyd Jones and T James Jones. The Stuart Burrows International Voice Award grows from strength to strength and attracts singers from all over the world, but this year the judges commented that the standard was particularly high. But the final concert was one that would not have been out of place on any stage. The choirs rose to the challenge to perform to an outstanding standard and local girl Fflur Wyn truly charmed her audience. We are grateful to Karl Jenkins, Andrew Greenwood and all who took part and gave a world class performance”.
“This concert was superb and was a fitting ending to a period of public celebration of Trinity’s university college status” said Dr Medwin Hughes, Vice Chancellor. “The University has earned an excellent reputation for its bilingual training programmes within the Arts in Wales. What better way then for Trinity to note its success than through the Arts. We are very grateful to the artists, poets and authors who have given their work as permanent recognition of this success and look forward to future developments within the creative and performing arts”.
