Dic Edwards’ Latest Piece Performed on the Streets of Liverpool

09.12.2009

A ten minute experimental opera created by Lampeter playwright Dic Edwards will be performed for free in Liverpool this Christmas.

The street opera has been specially written to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness in the city.  The opera grew out of a project with homeless people in Liverpool and was commissioned by Liverpool’s leading community theatre group Collective Encounters who use theatre as a tool for social change, making new work for new audiences in new spaces.

The opera  Songs for Silenced Voices is a collaboration between Dic, Director of Creative Writing at Lampeter, and the well known Liverpool composer Patrick Dineen.  Rehearsals have already begun in preparation for performances four times a day on 9 and 10 December 2010.  The free performances will take place in a disused shop in The St John’s Shopping Centre in central Liverpool as part of the Theatre for Social Change Symposium at the Royal Standard Artists Studios.

The company will be working with Dic in the New Year on a more substantial version of the piece.
