Formerly the head of the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Bangor, he was appointed Professor of Theology in the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in 2010 and is now Provost of the Lampeter campus. He has published widely on religion and society in Wales, and has lectured at the National Eisteddfod on numerous occasions. His latest book, a study of the life and work of the nineteenth century Glamorgan prose writer, Edward Matthews of Ewenni, is due to be launched in the Eisteddfod in August. A native of Morriston, he and his wife now live in Lampeter.

Professor Morgan says:

‘It is a great honour and a privilege to be called to the Gorsedd as it is the ultimate accolade for any Welsh person. I am humbled to be joining an institution that has recognised people who have done so much for Wales. I am also pleased that our university is being recognized in this way’.

The Gorsedd is responsible for the pageantry of the National Eisteddfod of Wales and it organises and presents the colourful and dramatic Proclamation and Gorsedd Circle rites, and the Chairing, Crowning and Prose Medal ceremonies on the main festival stage.

Amongst the other well-known faces honoured this year is First Minister, Carwyn Jones (Blue robes), Radio 1 DJ, Huw Stephens, who, as an artist and musician, receives the Green robes, and famous Welsh actress, Lisabeth Miles, who will also be invested in Green.

In line with the Gorsedd of the Bards’ revised arrangements for honouring new members introduced for the first time this year, Professor Morgan will be wearing Blue robes, reserved for those in public, academic or political roles.

From now on, only the winners of the main stage competitions at the National Eisteddfod will be honoured with White robes. Everyone else entering the Gorsedd will be accepted either to the Blue or the Green, dependent on their area of expertise.

Professor Morgan will be honoured on the Eisteddfod Maes on Friday morning, 10 August. A full list of those honoured is available on the Eisteddfod website, www.eisteddfod.org.uk
