A young countertenor from the USA has won the Stuart Burrows International Voice Award and the top prize of £4,000.

Kangmin Justin Kim impressed judges Brian Hughes and Leah-Marian Jones at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David Music Festival competition last month which saw four other soloists reach the final for the coveted prize.

Korean-American Kangmin Justin Kim is currently pursuing his Master of Music degree at the Royal Academy of Music, studying with Diane Forlano and Ian Partridge. A recipient of Rhoda Jones Roberts Scholarship, he was named the winner of this year’s Michael Head Song Prize and a finalist for the prestigious Richard Lews Award at RAM.

For this summer, he was selected to be a participant for the Thomas Quasthoff Masterclass a the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, and in August he can be seen in Tete a Tete Opera Festival’s production of The Shadow of the Wave.

The other competitors to reach the final of the competition were Elin Pritchard; Lynsey Docherty, Sarah Power and Mari Wyn Williams.

The Stuart Burrows International Voice Award competition is now in its seventh year and in their adjudication both judges commented on the excellent standard reached by all of the finalists.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Medwin Hughes said:

“We congratulate the finalists for providing a tremendous competition. It was a fitting end to the month the artistic events that we have enjoyed as part of the Gwyl! Music Festival. The Stuart Burrows International Voice Award grows from strength to strength and we are honoured that the world renowned tenor lends his name to the competition”.

Stuart Burrows, a former Trinity College student, is considered one of the World's Great Lyric Tenors. Born in Wales, his career has taken him to all the major Opera Houses of the world singing all the leading tenor roles. He has appeared at the Metropolitan Opera, New York on twelve consecutive seasons - a record for any British singer and the distinction of being invited by the Met on four occasions to join them on tour of the USA.

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David is central to the development of opportunities within the arts and culture in Wales. Its Wales International Academy of Voice provides a highly specialised and unique environment for a small number of exceptional singers at the early-professional stage, selected and recruited globally, to develop and polish their talent to the highest professional standards.

The MA Advance Vocal Studies course involves instruction via individual coaching and master classes and all vocal recitals by the Academy's students are open to the public.
