Publius Terentius Afer (195/185–159 BC), better known as Terence, was a Roman comic dramatist. Born a slave, he was taken to Rome, where he was educated and later freed. His verse plays were based on Greek works. Terence eliminated their original prologues, used contemporary colloquial Latin, and introduced a measure of realism. His work influenced later dramatists such as William Shakespeare.
