Lady Maria Callcott. Journal of a residence in India. Edinburgh, 1812
Maria Graham (1785-1842) was a leading female travel writer of the early 19th century. The daughter of a rear-admiral, she travelled to India in 1808, where she fell in love and married a sea captain, with whom she travelled by sea around India and Ceylon. They visited Bombay, Poona, Colombo, Madras, and Calcutta, and numerous temples and ruins, before returning to England in 1811. Maria went on to travel widely in South America. Following the death of her husband in 1822, she married the artist Augustus Wall Callcott Robinson.
