Academic Interests
I am currently engaged in doctoral research with regard to the significance of gift, sacrifice and exchange within Christian systematic theology. This draws on a rich diversity of sources from the Biblical witness in both the Old and New Testaments, the writings of the Church Fathers, particularly Irenaeus, Athanasius and Augustine, and the trinitarian theology of the immensely significant thirteenth century theologian Thomas Aquinas, alongside more recent voices such as the twentieth century Catholic theologian Hans urs von Balthasar, the philosophers Jacques Derrida and Jean-Luc Marion and the cluster of largely Anglican writers associated with the influential contemporary Radical Orthodoxy movement, particularly John Milbank. The thesis also explores the importance of gift, sacrifice and exchange within a liturgical/sacramental context and concludes with an exploration of the ethical implications for globalised trade.
