Studying Sports Science and Primary Education, James Piggott was attracted to UWTSD for its diverse courses and for its fantastic sports facilities. His first impressions matched his prior UK visit in 2017, and he quickly felt at home.

“ I feel I settled in fast, I never once got homesick, and I’ve enjoyed my entire time here. Student life is fun here since most of my friends I’ve made here live on campus as well. I like how it is a smaller campus in Carmarthen so the university has a good sense of community, calmness, and cleanliness.”

James has made the most of his time as a student on campus taking part in the SU events such as ten-pin bowling and Bounce Below. He’s also joined the football team. He said:

“I had a great time playing for the football team. I was able to play the last four games of the season and I scored four goals in those four games. Nice friendly bunch of lads on the team. The facilities on campus are good. I get a good amount of use out of the 3G football pitch. I regularly go up and kick the football with my mates. The quality of the football at UWTSD is relatively similar to the quality I play back in Canada. There is also a different variety of sports on offer here compared to Canada.”

He immediately felt at home on campus after being well supported by the UWTSD international team and his lecturers, saying that everyone has been friendly and helpful.

His time at UWTSD has broadened his horizons academically and culturally.  He’s excited to share his experiences with friends and family back in Canada, sparking their interest in studying abroad, especially in Wales.

Kath Griffiths, UWTSD’s International Regional Manager noted:

“We are thrilled to have James join us this semester, and it’s wonderful to see how fully he has embraced campus life. Studying abroad is a significant decision, one that can truly be life-changing. It provides students like James with the opportunity to not only immerse themselves in a new culture but also to reflect on their lives back home. Moreover, these exchange programs aim to foster international cooperation and knowledge exchange between Wales and Canada on a broader scale.”
